Professor Taole Mokoena was appointed South Africa’s Health Ombud in June 2023.
He is a retired Professor and Academic Head of the Department of Surgery and chief
Surgeon of the Department of General Surgery at the University of Pretoria and Steve
Biko Academic Hospital.
Professor Mokoena’s forte lies in strategic focus analysis and negotiations. He is known for
serving with consciousness, applying himself robustly and ethically without fear or favour.
He continues to lecture at the University of Pretoria Medical School and conduct research
contributing to several publications.
The thrust of the Health Ombud’s work is to protect and promote the health and safety
of users of health services by considering, investigating, and disposing of complaints
relating to non-compliance with prescribed norms and standards in a procedurally fair,
economical and expeditious manner. The Health Ombud recommends remediation and
improvements in healthcare delivery within institutions and the healthcare system
